Trip Overview
Day-by-Day Itinerary
We meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. In the evening you meet your guide and go through the plan, the permits and the gear.
We check your personal climbing gear and fix anything missing. We finish the permit paperwork. This day is also a buffer for flight delays.
A short morning flight takes us east to Tumlingtar. From there we drive on a rough road toward Num and Seduwa. We sleep in a lodge.
We finish the drive and start walking through forest and farmland. The trail climbs to the village of Tashigaon. We camp here.
A long climb through rhododendron forest takes us up the ridge. We camp near Khongma Danda. Altitude gain is large, so we go slowly.
We follow the high ridge with views toward Makalu. The trail goes up and down. We camp near Dobato.
We cross Shipton La and Keke La, then drop into the Barun valley. We camp at the yak pasture of Yangle Kharka.
The valley opens up as we walk toward the head of the Barun. We camp at Langmale Kharka.
We walk beside the glacier moraine to Makalu Base Camp. Makalu stands right above camp. We camp here.
We take a short walk high and sleep low. The rest of the day is for resting and checking gear.
We follow the glacier up to the camp below Sherpani Col. The ground is rough with rock and ice. We camp.
We climb to the high camp below the col. This is a steep, cold camp. The crew helps set up and the guide checks the route.
We start early. The col has steep snow and ice. We use crampons, harness and fixed rope on sections. After the col we descend toward Baruntse Base Camp.
This day is for rest or weather. If we do not need it for weather, we use it to rest before West Col.
We climb up the glacier to the camp below West Col. We camp high and rest early.
We cross West Col using fixed rope on the steep parts. Then we descend into the Hongu side toward the lakes of Panch Pokhari. We camp near the lakes.
This day is kept for bad weather or tired legs. If it is not needed, we move on early.
We walk through the Hongu valley and climb to the base of Amphu Laptsa. We camp below the pass.
We climb the steep slope to the pass with fixed rope. We then descend on a rocky and icy trail toward Chhukung. A long day.
We are now on the Everest side with lodges again. The trail goes down the Imja valley to Pangboche.
We walk down through Tengboche and the forest to Namche. You can have a hot shower and a good meal.
We follow the Dudh Koshi river down to Lukla. We celebrate with the crew in the evening.
We fly back to Kathmandu in the morning. The rest of the day is free.
This day is kept for flight delays or weather on the Lukla flight. If everything runs well, you can rest or see the city.
We take you to the airport for your flight home.

Frequently Asked Questions
You should have done a long high altitude trek before, ideally above 5,000 m. Basic skills with crampons, harness and rope are needed. If you are new to these, tell us and we can talk about practice before the trip.
Sherpani Col, West Col and Amphu Laptsa have steep snow and ice. We use crampons and harness, and fixed rope on sections. They are not easy walks.
You bring your own crampons, harness, ice axe and helmet, plus warm clothing and a good sleeping bag. We provide group gear such as fixed rope and anchors. We will send you a full list.
You need entry to Makalu Barun National Park and Sagarmatha National Park, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality entry fee. We arrange the paperwork. Whether a separate permit is needed for the cols is being confirmed.
We go up slowly and have an acclimatisation day at Makalu Base Camp. We walk high and sleep low where we can. Tell your guide at once if you feel unwell.
We have spare days in the plan. We cross a pass only when the weather and the route are safe. In bad weather we wait. A day count that is too tight is the main reason such trips fail.
Your guide will decide on the best action, which can include going down or calling for a helicopter. You need travel insurance that covers helicopter rescue above 6,000 m. Please check this before you book.
We run it from Makalu to Everest. This way you gain height more slowly and finish where lodges and flights are easy to reach.
