Trip Overview
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Early morning, drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi by shared or private jeep. The scenic journey follows winding mountain roads with views of green hills, rivers, and traditional villages. After arriving at Syabrubesi, begin the trek through lush forests alongside the Langtang Khola to Pahiro.
After breakfast, continue trekking along the Langtang Khola. The trail passes through dense rhododendron, bamboo, and oak forests, with suspension bridges and cascading streams along the way. Keep an eye out for Himalayan wildlife and birds. Gradually ascend to Ghoda Tabela, a peaceful mountain settlement surrounded by forest and dramatic hills.
Today, the trail enters the alpine zone as you trek through yak pastures, meadows, and traditional Tamang settlements. Along the way, pass colorful mani walls, prayer wheels, and chortens while enjoying increasingly spectacular mountain scenery. Continue toward Kyanjin Gompa, surrounded by Langtang Lirung and other impressive Himalayan peaks.
Wake at the highest point of the trek. There is time after breakfast to walk out onto the moraine behind the village or up towards the glacier viewpoint before the light goes flat, and to look back at Langtang Lirung from the one place on this itinerary where you are standing still underneath it.
Then the long descent begins. You lose most of the height gained over the previous three days in a single push, retracing the valley through the yak pastures and back into the treeline. Descending is faster than climbing but harder on the knees β trekking poles earn their place today. The trail follows the Langtang Khola down through the forest to Lama Hotel, where the air is noticeably thicker than it was at breakfast.
A shorter walk to finish. The trail drops steadily through rhododendron and bamboo forest, crossing back over the suspension bridges you came in on, and reaches Syabrubesi by late morning.
From there it is a 7-8 hour drive back to Kathmandu on the same winding mountain road. Counting the descent, this is a 13-14 hour day door to door, and you will arrive in the city in the evening. It is the price of seeing Langtang in five days; if it sounds like too much, our 11-day itinerary breaks the same journey into shorter stages.
